Reaching the square

The Piazza Navona lies in the centro storico, the historic centre of Rome. The long oval follows the track of the ancient Stadium of Domitian, and the buildings around it keep that outline. You reach it on foot for the last stretch. Cars are restricted nearby, and no metro station stands on the square itself.

Most visitors combine a bus or a metro ride with a short walk. Buses run along the Corso Rinascimento, beside the square. Metro line A serves the stops Spagna and Lepanto, which are the names usually given for this area. Use a journey planner for the walking time from the stop you choose.

By bus

The Corso Rinascimento is the main bus street beside the square.

The lines 30, 70, 81, 87, 492 and 628 use the Corso Rinascimento. For line 492, the stops are Zanardelli and Rinascimento. Direction and departure times change, so check the stop sign and the live timetable before you board. If you come from the Chiostro del Bramante side, the lines 64 and 46 also serve the Corso Vittorio Emanuele near the Chiesa Nuova.

The square is also close to the Campo de' Fiori and the Via dei Coronari, which makes a walk between the three easy.

By metro

Metro A and a short walk.

Take Metro line A to Spagna or Lepanto and walk or change to a bus for the last stretch. Which station is closer depends on your route, so look at a map before you choose. If you arrive at Termini, plan the connection in a journey planner. Direct links and the fastest walking route are best checked on the day.

Rome's other big sights sit farther away. For the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, see our sister guides. Cruise passengers will find the route from the port in the Civitavecchia guide.

By car: the ZTL and parking

The historic centre limits traffic during set hours.

ZTL hours

The limited-traffic zone of the centro storico applies to vehicles without a permit. Day hours: Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., holidays excluded. Night hours: Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., suspended at night in August.

Electric cars

New ZTL permits apply from 1 July 2026, including for electric and hydrogen vehicles that were authorized before. Do not assume that an electric rental car may drive in. Do not count on a hybrid being exempt either; check before you drive.

Street parking

Blue-line spaces cost €1 per hour outside the ZTL and €1.20 per hour inside it. That is a general street rate, not a promise of a free space near the square. The signs on the street decide.

Hotel by car

A parking right does not give you permission to enter the zone. A booking at a hotel does not either. Ask your hotel how it handles arrival by car before you drive in.
