Staying near the square

The Piazza Navona sits in the Centro Storico, the historic centre of Rome. Campo de' Fiori and the Via dei Coronari are close, and the lanes between them hold hotels, guesthouses and apartments. This page names no hotels and quotes no room prices. It helps you judge a listing and shows what the city adds to the bill.

Room prices in the historic centre vary with season, size and category, so compare them for your dates. What stays the same is the tourist tax, a fee set by the city and charged per person and night. Plan for it on top of the room rate.

What to check before you book

A central address does not tell you how a room feels.

Night noise

Bars and restaurants shape the evenings on Campo de' Fiori once the market has closed, and the terraces on the Piazza Navona fill up at night. Ask where the room faces and how close it is to the street or the courtyard.

Room position

In old buildings, a quiet street and a quiet room are not the same thing. Ask which floor the room is on and which side it looks to.

Lift and steps

Historic houses often have steps at the entrance or between floors. If you travel with a stroller, a wheelchair or heavy luggage, ask whether a lift reaches your floor and whether the entrance has steps.

Deliveries and arrival

Ask how luggage reaches the door and where a taxi can drop you. Cars are restricted in the zone, so a taxi may not reach the door.

Arrival by car

The traffic-limited zone of the centro storico also affects the drive to your hotel. A booking alone does not give you permission to enter. Ask the hotel how it handles cars before you drive in.

Rome's tourist tax in 2026

Per person and night, by type of accommodation.

Rome charges a tourist tax, the contributo di soggiorno, to guests who do not live in Rome. It applies to hotels, guesthouses, tourist apartments and short-term rentals. It is calculated per person from the category of the accommodation and the number of nights. No separate tax exists for the Piazza Navona area. The rates below have applied since 1 October 2023 and are the ones listed in 2026.

Who pays and for how long

The rules in short.

Children

Children up to their 10th birthday are exempt. Other exemptions need proof, so do not assume one applies to you. People with disabilities and business travelers are not automatically exempt.

Residents

The tax applies to people who do not live in Rome.

The ten-night limit

The limit counts ten consecutive nights in the same accommodation in a calendar year. It is not a total of ten nights in Rome across different stays. Longer proven study or work stays follow a separate yearly cap.

Hotels near Piazza Navona: frequently asked questions

Is it noisy near Piazza Navona at night?

Parts of the area are lively in the evening because of the terraces on the square and the bars around Campo de' Fiori. How loud a room is depends on its position, so ask where it faces before you book.

How much is the tourist tax in Rome?

In 2026 it ranges from €3.50 per person and night in a hostel to €10.00 in a hotel of 5 stars or higher. A 4-star hotel charges €7.50. The table above lists all types.

Do children pay the tourist tax?

Children up to their 10th birthday are exempt. Other exemptions require proof and do not apply automatically.

For how many nights is the tax charged?

The standard limit is ten consecutive nights in the same accommodation per calendar year. It is not a total of ten nights in Rome over several stays.

Can I drive to my hotel in the centre?

Only with permission. The traffic-limited zone has set hours, and a hotel booking does not replace an entry permit. Ask the hotel about arrival by car before you book.

Which hotel is the best near the square?

That depends on your budget, your dates and what you want from a room. Compare a few listings for noise, lift access and room position, and add the tourist tax to your total.
